How To Draw a Rose Bud

A few weeks back when my mom's garden first started to bloom I was able to get out and do a few sketches.  Here is a quick and easy process share on how I like to draw rose buds.

Start with two lines for the stem.  Add a tear drop shape on top.  Draw lines to indicate the petals. Open the tear drop shape by erasing the line connecting the bud to the stem.

That's pretty much it!  You can now add shading and more details.  Shading is kinda like coloring with a pencil.  Use a light hand and shade or color in where you see dark areas on the flower.  I drew another example with different petals.  Break it down to the stem, bud, petals, and shading.

I straightened up the stems and used curved lines on the bud to show shadows.  Don't forget to use your eraser to open the form and give a realistic look.  I drew small triangle shapes for the leafy bits hanging off the bud.  Flick your pencil up and away to get a nice tip on the top of the bud.  Have a reference photo or the real thing close for observation.

I'd love to hear from you.  Let me know if this was helpful!

Work In Progress - Hidden Tag Pages

sketchbook WIP

Last week work was so crazy.  I didn't have a lot of time in my sketchbook.  The page on the left is further along and I feel good about it so I decided to share it today.

Art Journal Page - Hidden Tag

I used tags and washi tape to create hidden pages.  Spring inspired of course.

I like to use a white charcoal pencil to sketch out my ideas (and to make corrections).  If it doesn't work I can just wipe it away.

Do you have a WIP?  Please share!

Moving On - Art Journal Page

It feels good to look back at something and no longer care or be bothered by it.  Something that consumed so much brain power is now just a twinkling of a thought.  I just had to say to myself
...it's about time!  The weight is lifted.

hidden journaling...

 Have a great Tuesday!

Painting Blue Skies

This is the painting I gave my mom for Mother's Day.  It's 11x14 acrylic on canvas.  One of my goals this year was to paint a painting for each one of my family members.  My mom is done - six more to go.  There was a lot of problem solving with this painting.  I wanted to keep it simple but not completely boring.  She hung it in the entry way and it looks great.  Every time I come in the house I'm inspired to paint.

I took it step by step and pushed myself to see it to completion
and not give up like I often do.

Hope you all have a great week.

Visual Journal Process - Friday Morning

I picked up a canvas paper pad from Jo-Ann's a few weeks back and was inspired to paint a tree.  The trails where I live seem to be waking up and there is so much to see.  Here was how I spent my morning last week.  Breakfast and a walk.

I get overwhelmed when it comes to painting sometimes.  Lately I've been telling myself that whatever happens....it's just paint :)

I've already started on my 2nd page.  I give myself two days and move on.

Have a great Thursday!

DIY Flower Petal Pencil Holder

So, I have a board on Pinterest called DIY Maybe.  Up until now I have yet to create anything noteworthy but I liked the way this project came out so I thought I would share. Yesterday, I went to the dollar store and picked up clear plastic spoons and fake roses.  The instructions are simple...glue petals to the spoons and then glue to the jar.  The original project can be seen here.  My mom saves old glass peach jars for me and I thought the shape was perfect.

I used the large petals from four roses to fill the majority of the jar.  I used the smaller petals to fill in the gaps.  I want to make a few more but I plan to use better quality roses.  If you are heavy on the hot glue it will show through the cheap petals.

Have you created anything Pinterest inspired?  Leave me a link in the comments below!

A Dormant State - Art Journal Page

It's been sorta gloomy here so I thought I would share another art journal page.  The bare trees around my house give a new perspective.  What we normally wouldn't be able to see is now in clear view.  The rabbits and birds have a harder time in hiding.  I look forward to spring but I won't rush it.

I also wanted to share some flowers from Mother's Day.
My mom loves these and they are still going strong.

Does anyone know what these are called?  They bloomed beautifully.

New Art Journal Cover!

I couldn't wait to get started on my new journal.  I love the way the cover turned out.  I chose a chipboard album because I love the chunky pages.

I used washi tape for the background to add instant texture.

The title came about while I was writing.  All of the practice I put in drawing flowers has paid off.  I'm much more comfortable drawing them.  I'm learning to practice drawing things that are hard for me.  If not then I'll never know that I could do it!

I want to thank everyone for your kind words and advice regarding my last post!  I read every single comment and I want to thank you for taking the time to stop by.

P.S. This will be a painting for my store in the near future!

Watercolor Art Journal & Website Button

I'm working in my large Strathmore Watercolor journal.  I drew this last year and forgot about it.  Click the photo below to see the original post and drawings.  I'm slowing down an taking my time in this journal because I really want to work on some canvases this year.  I always say it and never gets it done.  I'm working on three pages at a time and they are coming along well.

I'm using cheap watercolors from Michael's.  They seem to be doing fine.
I plan to break out my gouache as well.  I love when my desk is messy.  It's a sign of progress.

I finally have a GRAB BUTTON!  I took me forever to figure out how to make it but I was determined.  I have posted it below and on the side bar as well.  I plan on making a new one every month or so.  If you want to make one please watch this video as it was very helpful for me.  Let me know if you have success making one for your blog.

If you would like to display my button on your blog just copy the code below the photo, open add a gadget under your layout, paste into HTML/Java Script and you are done!

Canvas Mini Book

I picked up this canvas mini book from Micheal's a while back.  It sat around for a while before I decided what I wanted to use it for.  The theme over on the Sketchbook Challenge for June is garden doodles.  I don't have a garden of my own so I just searched for photos of my favorite flowers online.

I plan to bust out my oils and paint these up.

I am looking forward to seeing color on my flowers and
I'm interested to see how the canvas pages hold up to oil paints.

Happiness

Yesterday I zoomed off to the scrapbook store to see what new goodies I could find.  I came across the new Prima Lifetime collection.  The papers are full of subtle mixed media backgrounds and whimsical drawings.  I got the 6x6 pad because I thought it would be great for card making.

I just loved this sketch by Pamela Young so I used it for this card.
She has a sketch challenge going on right now so please hop over and check it out!

I am also entering this card into Challenge 4 Everybody - Anything goes.

Have a great Sunday!

Prima Engraver Card

I feel like it's been a while since I sat down and made a card.  I almost left the scrapbook store without this Prima Engraver paper collection but I'm so glad I picked it up.  I busted out my super old Martha Stewart butterfly stamps and popped them off the card.  I used the Mojo Monday card sketch and love how my card turned out.  I'm a little rusty with my fussy cutting but I went for it anyway.

I am sharing my card in the following challenges;

 Have a great night!
